Happy New Year and hope all is well thus far!

2011 ended with great accomplishments creatively (and, personally)!

I love making/giving (and, receiving) handmade gifts! For my family in Chicago, I purchased fleece to make throws. For my niece and youngest nephew, I added binding (cotton and microsuede fabrics) to the edge of their throws.

For my dad, I used a solid blue cut of fleece and a cut of flannel shirting fabric for the backing. No binding, I "quick-turned" the edge!

For my sister's throw, I simply fringed the edge using pinking shears. It turned out lovely! And, for my eldest nephew's throw (not shown), I fringed the edges of his solid blue fleece using regular shears.

They all are enjoying their throws!

In between Christmas sewing, I purchased flannel and cotton remnants from JoAnn's to make boxers for my son. When my two youngest daughters knew I was sewing boxers; they wanted boxers, too!

I found a really nice cut of pink flannel with black silhouette print of ladies on them in the remnant bin and made a pair for the 2nd oldest daughter...she loved them! NOTE: if you are going to shop from the remnant bins, make sure that you have at least 26" or more of fabric; or just purchase 7/8 yard of your fabric choice!

It's a really simple and free pattern on Burdastyle; Michael Boxers pattern! I am still sewing boxers! Valentine's Day is fast approaching! A nice present for your hubby!

Since I was on a flannel "thing" AND my brother and his wife had their first baby, I have been sewing cloth diapers! There is a great and free pattern, Rita's Rump Pocket! I found her instructions to be very easy to follow and they were pretty quick to make.

I will be making inserts for these diapers using the microcloths (?) that you use to dry your car. You can purchase a pack at Wal-Mart (Automotive section) cheap! When sewing with this pattern, I suggest sewing the channel for the elastic. It looks better and it snugs the legs better - no leakage! I will be making more of these throughout the year to donate!

...to finish and work on projects! This is what I've been up to! (Yes, that is a plastic wrap closure from a package of bread holding that tail. Mom, taught me that one!)

This cute cotton toddler's hat!

I taught a class of girls ages 7 to 17 Friendship Bracelets! We had loads of fun!

I found this 100% linen tablecloth in a thrift store. I normally am not a "green" girl, but for some reason, I was drawn and knew immediately what I wanted to make!

I used this pattern.

Made a great pair of shorts!

And, one of my current handiwork projects is...

this hand embroidery kit I found in the thrift store which included four white pillowcases to embroider. Only one of the pillowcases and only the first two scalloped-edge work was done on it! Fortunately, I found the same color of floss in my stash (with much searching and comparing)....SCORE!

Junk Love..."Excuse me, I'm stuck in the 70's"

Okay, so I love that these jumpsuits have come back into fashion, as well as the wedge heel! Usually, once you've lived through a certain 'style-period' you really do not want to repeat it. However, I'm stuck! Do you remember this pattern?

Well, I've decided to make this same pattern into pants! So easy...I just extended the leg length! And, to really make it "retro", I found this vintage fabric for $2 (ALL 8 yards of it)!

This tag (tape) was pretty old! $6.50 was a good price also!

With the summers so hot here in Florida, these are so comfortable and cool! I'll be making more!

Friday Finishes, New Job, and More Projects

Pretty Flowers...I'm still working on "centers" for my flowers. I have some buttons, beads and other things to experiment!

I used scraps from a jelly roll. Folded and ironed the strips lengthwise. I used the ruffler attachment for my featherweight for some, for others I sewed a simple basting stitch and pulled the threads for gathering. There is a base piece of fabric, approximately a 3" square to sew your ruffled/gathered pieces on. I will attach a bobby pin (for the hair)on some and others will have a pin (to wear on clothing). I like how they turned out!

Simplicity #4277. I've had this pattern for about, ummmmmm, more than 3 years. I finally made a top, or two, View F (circled, 2nd row, left)!

Here's a detailed look of the bodice fabric (cotton). The solid aqua color is linen. There are also owls on the bodice...so cute!

And, here is the lilac in linen! This is so pretty, sparkly, and girly!

I'm so happy how my summer wardrobe is turning out!

Good News! I've returned to school and have a new job! It's part time, which is better than "no-time". All Praises to Him! I'm hoping to teach sewing classes soon!

Next summer wardrobe project is from the 70's shorts jumpsuit pattern (shown here). I will convert to pants (which is fairly easy) and use a vintage fabric find!

I picked this pattern, view 'F'. It's my standard spring/summer top because it fits me nicely! And, I purchased this orange knit fabric for my top...

I really like this skirt pattern, view 'C, also. The fabric is a thrift find...a cotton drape/curtain that I featured in "Junk Love"!

I love the combination!

Friday Finishes

1. It began as a medallion center quilt block

...and, ended up a cute mini-bag!

In this book, Patchwork Style, they used a log cabin quilt block. I made the medallion center quilt block for a Round Robin that did not happen. What a perfect project to use this quilt block!

2. Playsuit (vintage pattern)

This is one style I loved wearing back then and will wear now...rompers and jumpsuits (playsuits)!

Some pattern alterations included making the shorts longer for me and, of course, the obvious. It turned out well and I'm satisfied with the fit!

Happy Hump Day!

I'm so glad to report that I found a new and exciting thrift store...and, worth the drive! Here's some goodies I found!

...bag full of vintage patterns for $1.90. When I have a chance to clean out my storage, I think I might have some giveaways!

...with a few modern ones.

I also found some vintage fabric! Well, the first pic is an actual fabric cut. It's a thin polyester and would be perfect for a maxi dress! The floral is a lightweight cotton drape. I see a cute skirt that will match an orange knit top I'm working on!

I got this cute bead carrier, bin, thingy last year for about $4 and, here is what I made with some of the larger beads...

Thread Painting

Haven't been able to get out and hang much with my sewing buddettes. But, thanks to my gal pal, Willa, I was able to partake in an amazing class, learning an amazing technique! Thread Painting! So much fun and the creative possibilities are endless! Literally!

The class was held at Country Cottage Sewing in Chuluota, FL. and Sherry is the most gracious hostess! This is the cutest country cottage!

By the end of class, you would have completed one small landscape piece. However, I want to embellish more on mine, but here's what it looks like...

At the beginning of class, we started on a project for a larger piece as we learned the technique. One of the projects is worked off of the fabric and the other is worked right on your fabric. Here's a look at the first project we worked on...once again, I will add more.

I love to learn new things and get new gadgets to work on the new projects (if I do not already have them; and most of the time, I do)!

I plan to take another one of Nancy's class on shading. And, I will definitely visit Sherry's again for other classes, or just to stop by and say, "Hi"!

Long Time, No See...

Hello everyone! I've missed you all!

Well, I needed some time to heal from life mishaps. Loss of home, loss of job, marital issues, and trying to give the younger children some stability in the midst of it all! And, I'm happy to report that God is Good, even in the middle of the mess; and that things are starting to turn around!

I am thankful to the childrens' school and neighbors and friends who have opened their homes and hearts to us all! I love you, all!

Any hoot! Here are some WIPs and a PhD I am working on and that have helped with my sanity!

I started this project soon after (or, maybe during) Christmas. Hexagon piecing has always intrigued me, then I found a wonderful tutorial by Texas Freckles; and joined the Hexagon Charm Quilt Flickr Group. I've done more than shown, but I still have a long way to go to have enough for a twin, maybe full size quilt. It's great to do while 'waiting', or 'listening' to a movie or tv!

Then, I started a knitting project for a customer/friend. A poncho! This pic was taken in its beginning stage and I've come a long way since, but still working on it...

Here's some Junk Love/Thrifty projects:

a pair of pajama pants for my daughter (and, will make a pair for myself) along with nightgowns for her and I. Purchased the full size fitted and flat sheets with 2 matching pillowcases for about $2 in its original package!

Next, is a workout and beach ensemble in dusty blue terrycloth. It's large scraps from a crafty friend who was spring cleaning. This terry is soooooo soft! I made a peasant top and yoga pants with a bell leg and slits on side of pant legs. Great for the beach! Just to hang out in or as a cover-up! Florida sun can be brutal during the summer!

My current project...

Rompers are 'IN', again! I remember wearing them 'back in the day'; pant and short rompers. I loved them then, and love them now!

Here's a close-up! (sorry for the poor pic quality)

This is a vintage Vogue pattern circa 1960. Of course, I will be altering and drafting this pattern to fit me and my body. You can go along for the ride, as I work on this project!

Here is the fabric choice! Not sure of the type fabric, but it's flow-ey and will give good 'drape' to the pattern! I think I'm going to wear this for my second oldest daughter's high school graduation on June 1. Yeah!

And,...

I'm still plugging away on my PhD's in my participation of Myra's PhD Challenge! I've committed to completing four of my projects by June. So far, this is 2 and 2 more to go! Still quilting this one with my grandson's help (as you can see)! I guess I'd better get crackin'!

Junk Love...Containers

I am a container fanatic! I need a container for EVERYTHING and EVERYTHING needs its own container! Here's a few containers repurposed!

I know you all recognize the two longer containers...it's what Crystal Light packs come in. I use them to travel to hold embroidery scissors, thread, needles, beads, etc. The other Crystal Light container is holding my paper hexagons. The large flat container (Rubbermaid "TakeAlongs") was purchased at my local Dollar General for $2 in the Clearance aisle. It works for me! There were only 2 of these; the one shown holds my items for working on my hexagons, while the other holds my items for working on my yo-yo's. Or, these containers can store loads of fat quarters! I plan to fill this large container with the hex's I'm making!

Vintage Love Wednesday...Vintage Notions Book Review

I decided that it would be "Vintage Love" Wednesday, as I am reviewing "Vintage Notions" by Amy Barickman.

Amy's book, Vintage Notions represents a culmination of a personal journey started 20 years ago when Amy began collecting rare sewing and needle arts books, vintage home arts magazines and cookbooks, as well as sewing, textiles and handiwork projects she found at antique stores and flea markets, ultimately creating one of the largest collections of its kind. This book was also inspired by the works of Mary Brooks Picken, who founded the Woman's Institute of Domestic Arts & Sciences in 1916, the largest school in history devoted solely to teaching women how to combine the domestic arts with entrepreneurism.

This book is a great inspiration to the crafty, vintage, and today's culture who is returning to a simpler lifestyle! The book is divided into seasons, then months/holidays. "Thimblefuls" are inspirational essays included in each month that seem befitting for that month. Amy's book provides women with imaginative and inventive ideas that show them how to use their talents and skills in the best way possible.

You all know that I recycle and refashion, and there are some great sewing projects for each month. Wonderful projects that have been added to my "Crafty-Do List": such as, the summer purse; lampshade; and of course, the Magic Patterns (chic, easy to make sewing patterns). I'm also looking forward to sampling the various embroidery stitches! This would be a great time for me to 'refresh' my skills! I also enjoyed (and, have added) the seasonal recipes to my recipe box. In particular, the "Planning Meals Without Meat"!

This book also features four storage pockets - one for each season. This will be great for keeping notes and all sorts of other little vintage things.

I truly enjoyed and will further enjoy this book! I feel that Amy celebrates the value of the crafty, domestic divas and their lives!

Junk Love Wednesday... to knit, or to crochet? or both?

That is the question! I like both but do so much more knitting, now. I crocheted a lot as a kid growing up and would love to do it much more!

Well, I'm sad to announce that two of my favorite local thrift stores have closed! They've been around FOREVER it seems... but apparently, while I was ill one of the stores had a 70% storewide sale! How did I miss that! (sobbing)

Anyway, here's my junk love find about 6 months ago!

...and, a small bag of circular needles!

I completed the slouch handbag and a couple of small totes for my Etsy!

I've also completed the top to my bellydance costume. I've added beadwork!

Junk Love With a Little Raqs Sharqi

...which is commonly known as, belly dancing!

This is what I do to release and it's good exercise for you! I've grown up with the dance, as my mom and aunt belly danced back in the day. The costumes are beautiful and you know I have to make my own.

I purchased this asian-inspired dress at my local thrift store. Funny, my mom (who was visiting at the time) and another customer was admiring the dress and then asked what I was going to do with it? I told them I was cutting it up to make a costume. They both looked at me in disbelief, then mom said, "I'm glad I'm leaving so that I will not see when you cut this dress."

I believe the black stretch velvet piece and the flowers were added to the initial dress. So, this might have been used for a costume previously. Anyhow, I found a tutorial on Flickr by MishaKitty on covering a bra and she has other tutorials based on belly dance gear.

I cut the dress in half and used the two bottom pieces to make a 2-panel skirt with side ties, which I will wear over a yoga pant, a full tiered skirt, or the balloon-like pants (can't think of the name, right now).

I've cut the pieces to cover the bra and am starting to hand-stitch the fabric and will later adorn with thrift store costume jewelry and medallions! I love the color purple and this was perfect for me!

These cute decorative fabric pieces were on the dress as closures at the top. I'll find use for them in either this project or another.

Well, I sent pics to mom and she loved it! I'll be sure to show the finished ensemble when I'm done!

Oh, and by the way my stage/dance name is Layan, which was given to me by my dear friend Malak! Layan means good and wealthy life!

'Learn to Do Applique in Just One Weekend' Blog Hop

I am so honored to participate in this blog hop and my guest this week, Nancy Brenan Daniel. Nancy teaches, judge, designs, and writes books and articles on quiltmaking.

After reading and looking over an updated version of "Learn to Do Applique in Just One Weekend", I was intrigued by a quilt project, Tropical Oasis.

Beautiful, right?!

Stacy: What skill level is the project for?

Nancy: Good question. I would say an advanced-beginner. The small blocks are pieced on the diagonal... but the machine applique should be easy for anyone with a common zig-zag machine.

Stacy: What is the design inspiration?

Nancy: Nature is usually the inspiration for many of my designs. I've been working with these colors in a patchwork project and I've been working with leaf 'contours'... so it just seemed like a natural progression. Love those acid-like colors together.

Stacy: What was the inspiration to come up with projects to do in a weekend?

Nancy: Everyone is overextended, time-wise, these days. I think people who are just learning new techniques need to see results pretty quickly to keep interested. Once a person falls in love (or serious like ;-)) with a technique they are usually able to invest more time. Beginners need to see RESULTS!

Stacy: As a beginner quilter (2 years), I agree.

Stacy: How did you come up with the colors for the projects? What inspired you?

Nancy: I work with color, teach about color, read about and study color ALL the time. These particular colors just seemed to be 'timely' for our lives right now.

Mom's Visit...Knitting and Junk Love!

My mom came for a short visit just this past week. As always, I'm so happy to see her!

Well, previous to her arrival, I sent her an email of this beautiful cowl to knit. Mom's much more advanced than I, and I'm not that confident in achieving patterns (i.e., zigzags, etc.) within the work. She replied, "Would you like to knit this cowl together? We can when I arrive." I accepted, she ordered the mini mochi yarn suggested, and it arrived a few days before her leaving Chicago. Mom and I had a mini knit-along which was fun and I learned lots! Mom wanted to be ahead of me in knitting after she returned to home, so that she could answer any questions I might have about the instructions. Well, I've been knitting away on this project and I think I will be able to post a pic of my completed project first!

There is a knit-along that started in mid-October of this same project on Ravelry.

And, of course, we went thrifting!

We hit the local library's thrift bookstore! We had to, since I was voting there that particular day!

This was an excellent find for 2 bucks! Box of patterns for recreating 176 early American designs in embroidery, crewel work, patchwork, applique, hooking, knitting, etc., etc., even rugmaking!

And,

...by Fons & Porter. I love their work and their show on PBS. This book is new (gotta be), there's not even a crease from turning pages! $1.

So, that started our thrifting day! "We'll knit later, after dinner and kids showers!" Next, we hit my fave used bookstore I talk about all the time! Mom got LOADS of knitting pattern books and magazines!

I found some things like, this old Vogue knitting mag with this beautiful medallion shrug I plan to knit! A book on silk ribbon embroidery, several other knitting and crochet patterns, and a craft book for kids on how to make things from cereal boxes. FUN!

Now, let's grab a cup of coffee on our way to another local thrift store! "Hungy, Mom?" "No, you?" "No!"

Mom found a cute reversible quilted jacket (I spotted it, as soon as we walked in...I don't think I was the only one, but I got to it first). I believe it was handmade and the fabric is silk or similar. The pic does not do justice for how beautiful it is!

We had a blast!

When she leaves, I never let her see me cry (although, I know my face shows the sadness). I just cry in the car on my way back home! I miss you Mom, even as soon as I drop you off at the airport!

Fall Costumes

Tees to Pants and Kimono Tops

I've been so busy with school, but managed to finish some sewing for my baby girl.

The tees-to-pants tutorial is from Cut Out + Keep. So, simple! I use an XL womens tee for my 7 year-old daughter who wears a size 8-10 girls. I use an XL mens tee for myself. I'm not telling you my size! (smile)

Cut the sleeves, then cut straight just under the neck area.

Cut straight up the middle (for legs).

Open both pieces. Where the sleeves were cut is now the crotch.

With right sides together, sew the crotch (twice, for sturdiness); then sew leg side seams.

Now, sew a waistband. You can use the sleeves. Insert a drawstring or elastic.

I also made kimono tops. I made a pattern from an existing one. Some have ties for closure; buttons with buttonhole closures; and buttons with elastic hairties for closure. The latter is the quicker method (which I use a lot).

This kimono was made using two different printed fabrics. Here's the front!

SEWButterfly: It's my pleasure! After reading your book, Junk Love Wednesday is the perfect day to introduce you to my blog friends!

NITA: Since Stacy often blogs about junking, today’s post will be about junking and quilts.

Now, I know most quilt lovers don’t think of quilts as junk. Unfortunately many others do. People will sell or give away grandma’s quilts because no one in the family sews or makes quilts. Others will discard quilts because they don’t go with the décor.

I ache for these people who don’t understand the treasure they have in their hands, although I am ecstatic for the lucky quilt lovers who acquire these special, valuable quilts. True, they may not be valuable money-wise, but they are steeped in history, sentiment and stories.

It’s important to share a quilt’s story, whatever part of it we know. Sharing the story will make the quilt more valuable and meaningful as it travels through hands and time.

Quilt stories change over time, just as the stories of our lives change. This is why it’s important to pass the story on with the quilt whenever possible.

For a quilt you made the story is simple. However, when we acquire a quilt we don't always, or even often receive the story. That's ok, we can add our part of the story to the quilt.

Finding a part of the story is as simple. First, fill-in any facts you may have then simply answer a few questions: How did a quilt come to be in your possession? What are your feelings about the quilt? What was the occasion of you receiving the quilt?

There you have it, one part of your quilt’s story.

The story for the quilts you make yourself is even easier. After all, you made the quilt, you know its story.

A quilt’s story doesn’t have to be written down, it can be passed on orally, much of our early history was passed down orally. However, taking the time to write the story increases the chances the next owner will know the whole story of the quilt.

Not all quilts are made for eternity. When quilts are used they will begin to wear out and eventually have to be discarded. The stories though can continue. Today we can take pictures to go with the stories, so those quilts that are well used and loved to pieces will still live on in their story.

When you go junking remember to look for homeless quilts, and help them finish their story.

I hope you will share some of the stories of your quilts, with your family, friends, and with me. My editor has asked for a second book and I’m currently collecting stories to include in it.

I picked up a couple of books this past week.

I can't wait to try these Japanese Thread Balls! They are cool-looking, aren't they?!

I can never resist a sewing or quilting book! The "Easy Quilted Coasters" book displays how to make a coaster from a quilt block. This should be fun!

She had boxes on top of boxes of sewing, quilting, and craft books yet for me to rummage. I think I will visit by the weekend or beginning of next week!

Sharing finds and treasures with you!

This saree is beautifully beaded!

It is good to visit my local used bookstore. This one is my favorite! If you live in Central Florida, it is located on Hwy 17-92, near State Road 434 in Longwood. The sign simply says, 'Used Bookstore'.

This book was an awesome find! It contains all of the stitches and how to do them of crocheting, knitting, embroidering, macrame, rugmaking, sewing, and tatting. This book will be greatly used, again! Although, it looks as though never used.

Well, I came home the other day to a Singer treadle sewing machine at my front door. The wood cabinet was in the worst shape, however, the machine head and irons were salvageable. See, sometimes the machines 'find' you! So that evening, I dismantled the irons from the cabinet, as well as took out the machine head. When hubby gets home from the road, we are going hunting for a butcher block (maybe, I can find one in a thrift store or on Freecycle) and then have an opening cut for the machine to drop into. I'll keep you posted on the WIP!

Girls Saturday Road Trip!

I needed this trip! Three of my sewing gal pals and myself took a 2-hour trip to Trenton, Florida to visit Suwannee Quilt Shop, Antique Gallery, Rose Cafe, Stained Glass Studio, Lynn's Country Cross Stitch Shop, and Frame Shop! We also met-up with a new sewing friend that lived nearby!

The quilt shop and cafe which is housed together was once the Coca Cola Bottling plant in the 1920s. The library has a tin ceiling and loads of books to purchase. Christmas is all year 'round in the Christmas and Gift Room.

Is this not the most colorful and happy applique quilt?!

I was truly amazed by this quilt and it's story! Sorry, it was hard to get a full picture of this quilt. It hung in a narrow hallway.

Did you read this? Her first attempt at hand quilting...WOW! The employees of the quilt shop said that she had lost her husband and the hand quilting was therapy for her!

After shopping and sightseeing in the quilt shop, we sat for lunch in the cafe. The food was delish and the conversations among the other ladies (customers and employees) was great! It was a very quaint and friendly restaurant!

We then, went to another building which housed the Cross Stitch Shop, Stained Glass Works, and the Custom Frame Shop!

The 'Home Arts' pattern books were dated 1936.

We had a blast!

Our 2+ hour trip home became a 3+ hour trip thanks to a University of Florida, Gators football game!

I was tired of looking at the standard black Featherweight sewing machine box. Boring!

I knew that I wanted to do something 'different' to make it my own! Decoupage, hmmmm?! I didn't know if I wanted to decoupage with paper or fabric until I saw this...and, this!

And, came up with this...

I still need to add grosgrain or some sort of ribbon to the handle, per suggestion of my online crafty friend, Rita! You gotta go check out her Etsy shop here! Still have more to do, but so far I'm pleased with my box!

Next, on the creative agenda, was this laptop bag for my daughter! All of my thrifting and garage sale shopping, left me defeated in finding a laptop bag that would fit "today's" laptops. Most of the ones I came across were for retro laptops! I'm talking about 5" thick from the 90's and shorter in width!

I'm also knitting a cowl for a dear friend! Found this easy and cute pattern by Madelinetosh! She's on Ravelry, also! Beautiful patterns!

These blocks are from a Block Exchange via Treadle On. For the love of vintage and antique people-powered machines! Rules for this block exchange, this block design and colors be sewn on either a treadle or hand crank German manufactured machine! Here's the machine I used!

Here's a center medallion block I made in March. This is one of my WIPs!

And, I've been feeling the urge to splurge on some fabric! The budget was tight, but my neighborhood fabric shop had a great sale! (That's my story and I'm sticking to it!) So, I picked up these fat quarters!

I'm sorry I didn't have any Junk Love for you! Maybe, next week...we'll see! For now, I need to go over homework with the 2 youngest children and work on my assignment, due Monday!

I actually acquired this vintage luggage for skates through Freecycle. It's perfect for MORE fabric stashes!

Bag of these lovely knitted? or crocheted? scarf and squares in cotton! I think they're crocheted. I love collecting projects from unknown artists (quilters, crafters, sewists, etc.)! The challenge is to find out what they might have been creating and making your own version!

I will have to say that this has been a crazy week! I've decided to go back to school, after twenty-something years. I am so excited and nervous ALL at once! The children go back on August 16, so I'm prepping for their return, as well!

Everyone knows when my hubby returns from working out of state, we have a garage sale, thrift store 2-day extravaganza! It was cancelled to help a friend! However, we just went 'looking' on the day he was to leave. It was meant for us to 'look' on this particular day!

We got a deal...4 walnut vintage chairs for our dining room for $20! That was hubby's find!

Housecoat for $1. This pic does not do it justice. The colors are so vibrant and the flowers are 'poufy' and raised. I'm thinking...refashion! Not sure what, yet!

Pair of pants (still with original tags) for $1! I love this print! This will be a recycle project...a 'Pinwheel' or 'Broken Dishes' baby quilt!

This Christening gown for $1.50! Some stains, but love the embroidery work! Not sure what recycle project this will become.

I took very special care in cleaning this beautiful quilt by an unknown quilter. Now, it is on my bed!

I also found several vintage sewing machines! Did not purchase...yet! Our friend and neighbor who owns one of the local thrift store, just so happened to be making room for new inventory and that's how we all got excellent prices for our finds! You know I'll keep checking on the sewing machines, periodically!

Junk Love and WIPs

HAPPY WEDNESDAY!

Not much going on in my fav thrift stores lately, but a lot of sewing going on! And, I guess what I found this week was my sign to 'Get Busy'!

I love retro sewing patterns! Last year, I posted that my husband bought home 2 large garbage bags full of vintage sewing patterns, that are now sorted and stored in vintage suitcases throughout my home. The oldest pattern I have is from the 1930s!

Sew, with that in mind, I took advantage of the overnight quietness in my home to work on WIPs!

The first, is my table topper. I finally found a backing I wanted to use...denim. This would be great to use outdoor, as well! I've pin-basted and am machine quilting; then will add the binding...

These next two projects are ongoing! They both come from two great blogs that I follow! The first, is a Teeny Tiny Nine Patch Challenge from Julia at GreenQuilts! Great Stash buster project! This challenge uses 3" squares of fabric! I plan to make 100. I've got about 48 more to go! Here's the latest addition...

Aren't they pretty?! I love color!

The next, is a project from Karen at Selvage Blog...Asterick Quilt! This is so much fun! I need to make 50 of these blocks...here's what I have so far!

I've only got about 30 more to go!

And, what started my week off on the "Good Foot", was this...

Wheeler & Wilson No. 9! Can't wait to get her into a cabinet with irons and sew, sew, sew! I belong to a wonderful family in Treadleonia! Where we talk, share, advise, swap, sell and gather about people-powered machines (i.e., treadles, hand cranks). She came from a home in Tennessee to me!

This is only the middle of the week and it's been 'full and joyous', thus far! I hope you all have a wonderful week and a better weekend!

Bits and Pieces

Hi!

A little bit of everything happening...

organizing and project planning.

Hubby found this cute and creative looking guy on his work travels and bought him home. He's a turtle made out of shells! I think he looks pretty cool!

I knitted my very first pair of socks! I think I did very well, for a first time sock knitter! The pattern I used is Fishnet Anklets from the Purl Bee!

About four months ago, I attempted to piece a hexagon quilt. I did not have triangle rulers needed for cutting, so I tried measuring and cutting without. This did not go well. So, Hubby treated me to a package of 3 Equilateral Triangle rulers from American Jane. Talk about speedy service, he ordered on Friday before the 4th of July and we received that Tuesday after the holiday! WOW! I was so impressed and will definitely order from them again! Now, I can re-cut the triangles properly and continue on with my hexagon quilt!

I'm starting on a two baby quilts. One for my dear cousin's first baby due in October; and one for a friend who's baby has arrived! Here's the pattern I'm using from Melissa Mortenson for Moda Bake Shop! I love her blog, 'The Polkadot Chair'! Check it out here.

Completed a skirt for a friend! I sewed the buttons on last night!

Junk Lovin Crazed

This past weekend was awesome! When hubby gets home from the road, we always have a 'family together' nite; then, he and I have a lunch and/or dinner date complete with thrifting! It's usually a two-day event for us! I love my husband!

Today is the last day of school! So the children and I will be busy bees! Alyssa (7) will get a chance to really work on her hand crank sewing machine; Alexis (17) will be sewing with us; and, my Charlie (10) will be crafting! He loves to make pipe cleaner characters! He's been doing so, since he was 5 years old!

Of course, we will frequent the pool (it's been 100+ here, lately)!

Happy Wednesday!

This is a wonderful week! One of my closest friends whom I've known for more than 25 years has come to visit me! This is a BIG deal! You see, my friend DOES NOT like to fly! So, when she promised to come and see me this week (via an airplane), I was ready to forgive her if it did not happen. And, to much surprise and gratefulness, she made it here! We're having a blast!

My Junk Love this week is fabric! You can never have too much fabric! Right?!

I have no idea what I will do with these pieces, but I thought they were very cool! Maybe, I can incorporate them into another quilt? Here's a close-up of one of the pieces.

Well, I have one more full day of hanging out with my friend, before she's off to the airport on Friday morn to return home! We're going fabric shopping and I'm sewing some pretty headbands for her!

Junk Love...Punch Needle

Could not let this one get away!

...2 collapsible crates full of punch needle embroidery floss and yarn for needle work. Including the punch needles (in a handmade case)!

Also in one of the crates, a round tin full of more yarns and other materials for punch needle!

Now, I'll have to learn how to punch needle! Not a problem! I find so many helpful videos on YouTube. Here is one from Creative Classes, Introduction to Punch Needle! Everything At Once!

WOW!

It's been a month since my last post!

Life...hmmmm! Mom came for a visit about 3 weeks ago. Always love when my Mom and Dad visit and this visit was much needed! No matter how old we (I) get, there always comes a time when we (I) need mom! Getting grandson in daycare and he (and his mom) being comfortable with daycare; helping daughter prepare for a move in a couple of weeks. Teenage daughter DRAMA; and, hubby working out of town; us missing each other and me being HERE with it ALL! WHEW! I needed some down time! I kept up with my sewing, knitting, and quilting to keep my sanity, but had not 'journaled' (i.e., blogged)!

Last week I visited one of my favorite thrift store's new space, which is closer to my home....uh-oh! My Junk Love find was fabric. Take a look!

I like to share my son, Charlie's Junk Love find! Charlie loves anything about space, planets, and the solar system! He found some cool vintage books at school that he can keep!

I remember Wonder Books when I was a kid! This book is dated 1971.

And, this book is by Scholastic Books, 1975.

Now, for my quilting 'blooper'! I desperately wanted to do a hexagon quilt. However, it called for Equilateral Triangle Ruler to make the 60 degree, 4.5" triangles. I do not own one of these, but I know how to measure!...or, so I thought! I cut 'crooked' triangles from 24 pairs of 2.5" strips sewn together! Don't know exactly, how many that is...but, it's A LOT!

Started sewing the triangles together to make half-hexagons per row, and the rows are crooked! Now, I have a quilt bag full of 'crooked' triangles and not sure what I'll do with them. However, I WILL purchase the triangle rulers to 'properly' cut and finally make my hexagon quilt!

In the meantime, I've cut some fabric to make a four-patch quilt and a split-rail fence block quilt!

I've been babysitting my grandson these days and haven't been able to frequent the local thrift stores lately. However, I did find more lovely vintage patterns on my last visit!

These are Ann Person, Stretch & Sew Patterns. I like these patterns because they're great for use on woven fabrics, jersey knits, stretchy fabrics. And, if you do not own a serger, no worries...you can sew these patterns using a regular sewing machine.

Panty pattern. Great to have and can be eco-friendly if they are made from t-shirts! Here's a tutorial for you! (just click on the word 'tutorial')

So, since we're on the subject of 'unmentionables', these cute nightgowns would be fun to make!

Sorry, this photo is blurry. These are various cute peasant dresses, tunics and tops. I love these type top/dress patterns, they are a flattering design on me!

And, this pattern is so right for my baby girl for the summer!

Total, my find includes 33 vintage patterns! The one below is great for my niece!

We will be so 'Retro Fabulous' this summer!

And, my husband would LOVE this item!

Now, I'll have to find some really colorful and cute fabrics to sew these new outfits.

A Hand Crank Conversion for Alyssa

I promised I would post pics of a sewing machine conversion from motorized to hand crank for my 7 year-old daughter, Alyssa. Alyssa LOVES to sew on a hand crank and I promised she could have her own!

I featured this sewing machine that was destined for 'removal' and became my junk find; February 16, 2010, "I'm A Junk Gypsy".

I ordered the parts to convert this machine from Stitches in Time; and I completed the conversion today!

I just need to purchase a lid for her machine. The base was another junk find of mine!

Alyssa is one happy girl! I gotta get a project this weekend for us both to do on our 'own' hand cranks!

Another man's trash...another's treasure! Junk Love Wednesday

I don't know if I can really call this Junk, however, I did find 4 of these in a local thrift store for less than $5 each - complete! I mailed two to my sister and niece; and, kept 2 for my daughters and myself!

I tried it this past week...and, I'm hooked (pun, intended)! I made a cowl neckwarmer, that even I can wear here in Florida. During the summers, the air conditioning can be brutal in most places! And, I'm at that age where I'm getting more aches. ;D

I found some really cool YouTube video tutorials for using these type and other looms! I plan to make hats for babies...

...aren't these yarns yummy? Another find in the thrift store!

I also, plan to make more cowl neckwarmers, hats for everyone, bath sponges...and, socks!

Nothing takes away from hand knitting...the looms are a different knitting experience (as the package says).

Junk Love Wednesdays

Hello All!

This is kind of a part 2 of last week's 'Junk Love'. I had eye doctor and dentist appointments within the last two days and am still recuperating. I was on my way to pick up this sewing machine on last Wednesday evening.

It is a Singer 66 and it's birthday is 1931. The motor is no good, so here's another project for me; that I would gladly take on! I will convert this one to a treadle; which means I will have to find an iron base. I love the 'hunt'!

The cabinet it came in, is beautiful and will be used to house an electric New Home or Morse sewing machine. I haven't decided yet.

Also, I just received the hand crank conversion kit in the mail today! So, stay tuned!

I visit my local thrift stores at least twice a week. Lately, I hadn't found anything that has 'caught' me! So, this week I would like to share an 'Oldie, but Goodie' Junk Love find...

...this weaving loom!

I finished weaving the project that was 'attached' when I purchased the loom. I've been checking out a weaving project thumbing through my Threads magazine. It is featured in March 2010 issue in 'Embellishments' by Shirley Adams; the article is called Abstract Weaving. It's actually for pin weaving to create intricate fabric.

All accessories included! Reminds me of my camping days of my childhood. All of the wonderful crafts we created!

Hopefully, this week there will be something that 'catches' me! Oh, I am purchasing a vintage sewing machine this evening that I found on Craigslist.

And, a short update on the sewing machine that was given to me while visiting a friend the day after her cleaning. The parts to convert this machine to a hand crank have been ordered and I am now awaiting for their arrival (possibly, next week).

I'm a Junk Gypsy

I LOVE junk shops, or uh thrift stores! Who doesn't? So many different ideas for items that once, 'used to be something else', or reviving old items to their 'original' use.

I sometimes find Junk Love at the end of someone's driveway. That would be the case this time. Going to visit my friend, this was right at her front door...on the way out to the end of her driveway!

It's not in the best of condition, nor works properly.

I'm going to clean this machine up! I plan to remove the motor and will purchase a hand crank conversion kit. I will also build a box for it to live in. My 7-year old daughter LOVES sewing on hand cranks and this one will be her very own!

Also, while on this visit, my friend and I checked out an antique shop and I found these vintage embroidery design cloths/fabrics tucked away in a basket on a shelf. These will be good 'sitting' projects (you know, doctor/dentist's office visits, etc.).

My promise to myself for the new year, was to make at least one quilt and/or some quilted item/accessory per month. I want to practice and learn new quilting skllls and needed a challenge. I am so inspired by all of the wonderful quilting blogs. So, I decided I would find and join a "Block Party", "Quilt-Along", or something. While visiting blogs the other day, I noticed that Sew Inspired was having a quilt-along...I joined! I thought I might have been too late to join; but, I was encouraged by Vicki to come along!

I completed all of the blocks for the quilt size I chose within a couple of days! I am now ready for sashing!

What's New!

This week, I drove 2 hours to the Tampa area for this beauty...

A Minnesota Model C treadle.

A really nice new friend offered this treadle to me! My daughter and grandson came along for the drive. She invited us to stay for homemade "beans and greens" soup and sandwiches for lunch. Beans and Greens soup contains Great White Northern beans, sausage, collard greens, and other seasonings. Boy, it's good and it's been cold here in Florida, lately. Perfect and tasty!

We had great conversations on sewing, sewing machines, and our sewing-related finds! She showed me her collection of beautiful people-powered machines. I learned how to free-motion quilt on a treadle...what a joy! My daughter is still talking about the soup!

Today, while hubby and I were at Lowe's getting wood to make treadle risers, I picked up another box of washers to make pretty pattern weights. Check out what Ruth does with them on one of my fav blogs, SewChic!

In between other projects, I'm currently knitting fingerless mitts for me; and knitting a Cowl Neckwarmer!

This past Thursday, this beautiful fabric was delivered!

My next project is a baby quilt for my new grandson! I saw this quilt and instructions in Quilt Magazine April/May 2009 #99 issue; "Love at First Sight Baby Quilt". Featuring First Sight Collection by Michael Miller Fabrics.

So vibrant! I love this fabric! I can't wait to get started on this quilt!

Today I picked this up in a thrift store. Is it for a sewing machine or is it for a spinning wheel for yarn?

Sewing Machine Salvation

I collect sewing machines! I love sewing machines AND I love to sew!

About a week ago, I picked up a treadle sewing machine. Unfortunately, the base was rusted and broken; and the cabinet was beyond repair. I was able to save the machine head...

The decals are silver and some are missing.

The wheel could not/would not turn.

All I can say is...Yuck!

And, after a couple of days of cleaning, so far she looks like this...

She looks so much better!

A great site for information on your vintage sewing machine is ISMACS. I found a little info on her: Minnesota Model A - manufactured by Davis Sewing machines and sold thru Sears & Roebuck thru 1910. The "Minnesota" was a vibrating shuttle model manufactured by the Goodrich Sewing Machine Co., of Chicago, Illinois. Made at the company's Kankakee, IL plant. This 1890s machine used a New Home type shuttle, a Domestic styled bobbin winder and resembles a National.

The wheel turns now!

With a little more cleaning and some new decals, she could look like new! Treadle On was a great resource on how to clean and repair vintage machines!

Now, all I need is to find decals and 'how-to' put decals on a machine. And, a treadle base and table. I had fun learning how-to salvage a machine in 'this' condition. This was my first attempt, to this extent...EVER! I hope to get as good as some other vintage machine collector's who clean, repair and restore machines!

Alyssa and a Handcrank

As a lot of you know, I've been teaching my 6 year-old daughter to sew. I originally had been teaching her on my Morse and New Home electric machines. When I purchased my first handcrank and let her give it a whirl, that's the ONLY machine she works on! My husband purchased another handcrank for Christmas for me and Alyssa replied, "that's great! Now, you have one to work on!"

She made a fabric ornament for her teacher, all by herself! This weekend she made her first patchwork project, a pillowcase!

I've been wanting and waiting for this machine! Isn't she pretty?! She is a 1890 Frister & Rossmann, Manufactured in Germany. A handcrank with a Transverse Shuttle.

It's an early Christmas present from my wonderful husband and I am so thankful and delighted!

The day she arrived, I literally jumped out of my seat when the delivery man rang my doorbell! Just like the children on Christmas morn running to gather in the living area to open presents! I was so excited! She was wrapped and packaged very well! So much so, that it maybe took me a good 20 minutes to get to her! Really, I broke out in a sweat!

She runs like a charm!

Quick Gift Idea

I made these little coin purses for my sister's stocking stuffers and Secret Santa gifts! They measure approximately 7" x 3" and lined. This is a good fabric scraps buster, also!

I used a shape from a stencil; cut two of coordinating fabrics each; sewed each piece, then inserted the lining fabric into the main purse; pressed selvedge edges down and sewed all around the edges. I couldn't decide on a closure (velcro, button, snap, etc.). No zippers...it will not work for this purse! Anyhow, I need to have these in the mail today!

As everyone knows, I am expecting my first grandchild! Now due, any day! So, when I found out about my daughter's pregnancy, I knew that I wanted my friend to create a blanket for my new grandbaby! Near completion of the blanket, Charlie, left me a wonderful message letting me know the blanket is a gift from her to the new baby! **SURPRISE** We received the blanket this past Friday and it is beautiful...I feel honored! A few things...

I love vintage! Stopped by my favorite used book store a couple of days ago to see whatz new! I picked up these 3 books: "Boutique (fashions to knit and crochet)" by Bear Brand and Fleisher Yarns; "How to Make Sleeves - Instructions for Plain, Raglan, Epaulet, Shirtwaist, Cuffs", published by Singer Sewing Machine Company; and "Vogue's Book of Smart Dressmaking", copyright 1942, The Conde Nast Publications, Inc.

The Vogue book includes a free pattern for a new dickey that I will definitely try!

After leaving the book store, I made a stop at the local thrift store and look what I found! A handmade weaving loom!

And, there was a project already for me to work on! I found a website that gives advice and suggestions on weaving. You can check it out here! I will continue working on this until completion...in between my Christmas projects and other UFOs!

Speaking of Christmas...I finally finished a lap quilt for my Mom! I've only been quilting just under 6 months and RESISTANCE is FUTILE! I love it! A true fiber artist to the marrow!

Life, Sometimes...

...happens right in the middle of your creative process!

Hello my friends! It's been a while since my last post. Life happened and here's the recap: daughter's baby shower; mom's visit; and the household having swine flu and the recovery process. It's been a trying month, but we survived and we're back in stride, again!

I have been working on several projects lately. Most are Christmas presents. I recently finished these spa slippers for my father-in-law. I used a brown microfibre fabric (sooooo soft) and brown braided trim that goes all around the slipper.

I've also been working on hand embroidered items like this cloth napkin with strawberries. Haven't decided who will get the napkins.

I'm also still knitting a cotton baby wrap and finishing up a quilt. It seems that I can get back into my creative world for the moment...until the baby comes! Hopefully, I can finish my presents in time!

A Beautiful Weekend With Family

On Saturday morn, we set out to have a picnic and enjoy a day at the lakefront. We even brought out my oldest daughter (she looks so cute and will be a wonderful mom)! My 16 year-old daughter was hanging out at Universal Studios with her friends (which beats the lakefront)!

Sandwiches and fruit; sprinklers, playground and watching the boats!

Thrifting and Such

Hi all! It's been a while since I last posted. Busy helping my daughter prepare for my first grandchild! I am so excited! Her baby shower is within a couple of weeks and I'm sewing a special dress for her to wear!

I've also been practicing sewing on my treadle. There is a sort of coordination and foot rhythm to sewing on a treadle. Great exercise! It's so much fun and I think I'm ready to sew a quilt on it soon!

I've also been thrift and antique shopping, and visiting estate sales. Resistance is futile.

My husband and I had a wonderful day, today in Historic Sanford, Florida! We ate brunch at a quaint restaurant. This place is so 'old skool', that plastic (credit/debit cards) is NOT accepted. Cash or check, or the owner will let you sign an IOU with trust that you come back and pay him. And, the food was awesome! We then walked down this cute cobblestone street and visited the antique shops and thrift stores. We had a blast!

I could not resist this vintage sewing machine in one of the thrift stores. I took it home, cleaned and oiled it; tested it and it works like a horse! Someone took very good care!

Last week, we visited another thrift store and I found all kinds of goodies:
I have 3 of the Knifty Knitter (top pic) at $1.99 each! I need to find one more...one for my middle daughter, the baby daughter, my niece and one for me!

...small container of stones for .69 cents. Don't know what I'll make, but they will not go to waste. Large container has zipper pulls of all colors for $1.99. I can definitely use these!

...pajama patterns for little ones and big girls; and zippers. The whole lot for .69 cents!

...some wood pieces; balls, napkin rings, thread spools, etc. This whole lot for .69 cents, also!

...lastly, yarn; both for .25 cents!

I am currently knitting a pair of fingerless mittens in a pretty chocolate, minty blue and brown multi-tonal yarn for a customer.

Labor Day Weekend Chill

...and, we did just that, chill!

We took the two youngest fishing. It was so quiet and peaceful at the lake. Maybe, four other people were around.

And on Labor Day, my sewing friend Peggy blessed me with a treadle machine! She and her husband were at my door this morn with two machines. It was perfect! I am teaching my 6-year old how to sew and the Morse (sewing machine) will be great for her and my 16-year old. I spent most of the day, cleaning, oiling and practicing on the treadle. I had fun playing! I realized that sewing on a treadle is going to be a mini-workout!

It was a great ending to a Labor Day Weekend Chill!

Okay, back to reality! Preparation for school tomorrow.

A Quilt Story

I am a virgin quilter! I've always wanted to learn to quilt and about a year ago, I borrowed "Kids Start Quilting" from the library to learn the basics. I was able to complete a piece quilt and it came out great!

Last week at my sewing group meet-up, my friend Peggy taught me to free-motion quilt! I was so excited and I worked on my practice piece the rest of that weekend! Now, quilting is becoming one of my sewing addictions!

I worked for Goodwill about 2 years ago, and in that time I met some interesting and crafty people (customers). On their regular visits, we would share all sorts of craft and sewing ideas and projects. An elderly lady who regularly visited wanted to give me her hand-sewn blocks for a quilt. We met each other for lunch and I accepted her offer.

I'm sure the fabrics used were 1960s and 70s. Colorful and bright, and a lot of polyester!

I sewed the blocks together, in the order she had them laid in the basket and then sewed the rows together. 9 blocks per row, 8 rows. Now, all there's left for me to do is batting, backing and knotting.

I am happy I learned the basics of quilting in order to finish this quilt in her honor!

New School Year...New Beginnings

First Day of School! Everyone was so excited this morning! As you can see, Alyssa is losing another tooth. I'd wish it come out, already! It's (the tooth) literally hanging by one thread. She was excited to wear her "Peasantly Cute" top and they both were sporting the denim pants I made!

However, my 16-year old wore a "Guns & Roses" tee, with pin-striped fitted bermuda shorts. She's my skater-girl!

Everyone was up early and ready to go! I know that the novelty will wear off within a couple of weeks. And, I will have to go through 'other' routines to get everyone up and out in time for their buses. But, I will enjoy this enthusiasm now!

This new school year has given me back time to sew for my shops. I've been sewing potholders all day today! If you like, you can find them on my Etsy shop.

Busy Butterfly

I've been a busy butterfly!

This vintage suitcase has been my 'not so easy fix'. The fabric inside is beautiful and in good condition. It just needed to be cleaned. The leather is water-damaged and I've been scraping the leather off for about two weeks, now. I plan to paint pretty pictures and/or decoupage. Maybe, both!

My next work-in-progress, knitting fingerless mittens with a matching hat. The yarn is from my stash and it's multi-color blue with some periwinkle. For the hat, I will use Lion Brand's Fisherman's Warmup Hat. The same pattern I used for my husband's hat. I think this set will look really cute! (Sorry, for photos. I'm a little tired).

And, some of my back-2-school sewing. A pair each of khaki pants for Charlie and Alyssa; apron smocks for Alyssa and a peasant top. I'm currently sewing jeans for them both. Alyssa's jeans will have ruffles on the bottom legs using leftover fabric from her peasant top. Too cute! (I'll post pics when I'm completed)!

This next project was from a tutorial from one of my favorite sites, Made. This dress was sewn using a mens dress shirt. It was so easy to sew and quick! I sewed two dresses in about an hour and a half. The other dress, I used a mens blue/white striped dress shirt.

Now, that most of these projects are near completion (except, my suitcase); I will start sewing my apron orders...and, still scraping leather.

First Quilt and First-Time Sewing

This talented 10-year old young lady is my niece. And, this was her very first-time learning to sew. Oh, I would have loved to be the one who taught her...but, it would've been hard to do long distance. My mom taught her to knit and just like her aunt (me), she picked-up that skill quickly! She's a crafty kid.

My sister enrolled her in a sewing course and her first project was a quilt. Well, my niece completed the quilt (and, the course) in just, one week!

WOW!

Needless to say, she did a very good job and I am so very proud! I wish I was nearby to take her fabric/craft shopping; hanging out in thrift stores to find things to re-fashion and recycle. I keep in my heart, that we will be able to work on projects together soon!

Peasantly Cute!

I made this peasant top for my baby daughter, Alyssa, as part of her back-to-school wardrobe. Peasant tops are really easy to make. Mine is a variation of the Prairie Blouse from Seams to Me a book by Anna Maria Horner. There is also an easy tutorial on one of my favorite blogs, Blueprints.

I purchased the fabric a couple of months ago from Sew It Up. The pink fabric was a coordinating/complimentary extra!

I used less than 1/2 yard of each fabric to make. This top fits girl size 7.

I plan to make several of these tops for Alyssa this school season. I have loads of dark denim and will make some cute elastic waist pants to complete this outfit.

Hello friends!

I'm starting to get my creative 'mojo' back! I've been drawing patterns and cutting out patterns. I've started working on some hand embroidery; taking your suggestions to make pillows and maybe baby bedding items from the wonderful vintage linen finds. I'm planning on some quilting projects, also...and I'm still knitting!

My current knitting project: Fishermen's Warm Up Hat. Lion Brand Free Knitting Pattern.

I'm knitting this hat for my husband, he really likes it! As you see, he's chosen colors chocolate and off-white. A really nice pattern and pretty easy! Maybe, I'll knit more of these in children sizes, also.

I'll continue to knit more dish and wash cloths in between my sewing and other projects!

aprons for school

I've begun my back-to-school projects. I have a list of some quick sewing projects and one of them is a cute apron smock. I took my 6-year old daughter, Alyssa to the fabric store to pick out three fabrics. And, these are her picks.

I was able to complete all four this weekend. The fourth fabric (pink) was in my stash.

Alyssa likes them and Mommi likes that they will protect her shirts and the aprons will look cute with her outfits! Now, on to the next project.

looking for suggestions

I love garage sales! Who doesn't, huh?

I picked up these beautiful vintage cotton tea towels and an embroidered napkins and placemat set.

My first thought was to make aprons from the tea towels. But, I would like other ideas. What about the embroidered pieces...I have four cloth napkins and four cloth placemats?

I need your help...what should I create using these beautiful pieces?

knitting washcloths and dishcloths

As previously posted, I've been staying up late nites working on quick knitting projects. And, knitting washcloths and dishcloths have given me instant gratification! Here is a 3-piece washcloth set I finished.

One washcloth is half-solid and half-striped; one is half-solid, two-color; and one solid color. I love the vibrant red and yellow colors. That'll wake someone up!

I started on this dishcloth...late last nite, after I completed the last washcloth of the set shown above. I wanted to use more of a 'earth tone feel' for the colors. Let me explain to you where/how I got my inspiration. My husband and I were up pretty early this past Friday morn. We made a cuppa and drove to the nearby woods and lake to sit, look and talk. The yellow represents the sun; the soft green (sorry, doesn't show-up well here...looks more like dusty blue) represents some plant life; and, the caramel represents some dried bamboo in the woods.

Since they've scrubbed the shuttle launch this eve, I'll keep working on it until it's complete. And, who knows, I'll probably start another late into the night. I'm sure!

Late Nites...

I have two young children (6 and 8), my teenager (16), and my oldest (23)...and my love, my husband! I have a busy home during the day and evenings! I can work somewhat during the day, but I thrive when everyone's asleep and not pulling me in 10,000 directions.

So, I've been staying up late nights and knitting washcloths for my family.

I needed to take a break from sewing...but, I still need to create! And, it's so quiet and peaceful!

I pulled out every color of 100% cotton fibers and started knitting. I believe I was able to give everyone their own favorite color!

I like the periwinkle and yellow; my husband wants solid dusty blue; my son likes the two tone dusty blue/sea green; my oldest daughter picked solid sea green; and the two youngest girls like pink; so, pink and burgundy for the baby girl and solid pink for the teenager.

Everyone loves the feel of the washcloths!

I will be making more for Christmas and upcoming birthdays for friends and family.

I guess I'll go to sleep now, it's after 3 a.m. Have to go grocery shopping in the morning...or, later this morning!

Just A Few Updates...

My personal summer sewing is on definite hold! Thank God, I live in Florida and will probably be able to still wear after 'summer' is officially over! And, by then will be the start of gift sewing and crafting! Whewwww!

I have been working on custom orders for aprons and scrubs for customers. I purchased "A Is For Apron" by Nathalie Mornu for inspiration! So many different ideas for aprons of all kinds, including smocks! So cute!

A couple of days ago, I received two packages in the mail. I love getting things in the mail...even, if I know what is coming, and especially if I know! It's like...my birthday!

One package had this cute vintage apron pattern I purchased...

and, the other packaged contained these fabrics (below) from Sew It Up! The website features pre-designed kits, patterns, fabrics, books, trims and buttons.

I ordered fabrics and one of my choices did not have the yardage I requested. They contacted me and I chose to take whatever yardage they had left...they included a 'bonus' fabric! What a wonderful surprise! Wonderful customer service!

Of course, the white/black fabric with whimsical scissors print will be a smock for me! I haven't decided if I will use the other two fabrics for school outfits for my youngest daughter, or for MORE aprons. We'll see!

I've also been shopping for fabrics and other treasures for my Etsy and ArtFire shops. And, to take a creative break away from aprons; and to start progress on items for the shops, I've been working on pincushions. Currently, the cupcake pincushions (pattern by Sandi Henderson of Portabellopixie). These haven't been stuffed, yet.

And, in between all of this....I'm still knitting washcloths. Check out this yarn I purchased!

Hi All!

Just a quick update. My Etsy Shop will re-open in August/September 2009. I have been really busy working on custom orders. And, shopping around for new fabrics and items for new creations for my shops!

So, for a break and to feed my creativity with other ideas other than what I'm working on at the moment; here's a tee refashion. I see these cute ruffle tops in stores and decided to make various versions for myself and friends. The pic does not do justice, sorry. It's made for a much more shapely dress form, which was being used by another project.
